What a difference a week has made!
By Kathleen Helliwell – Financial Director Technopoly Ltd
It’s amazing isn’t it how in times of crisis, technology advances at an incredible rate. A number of the world’s most useful inventions have come from wartime situations. Some appeared by accident, others as solutions to particular problems, tin cans, and glass jars were invented because Napoleon wanted to send food to the front lines without it decaying. The Internet came about as part of a contingency plan in case of a Cold War attack. In 1962 the U.S. needed an “intergalactic computer network.” Scientists there developed ARPANET, the prototype of the modern internet this eventually morphed into one of the most significant human technologies ever created.
During these unprecedented times here at Technopoly, we have had to engage our imagination and use all our creativity to make unimaginable changes to the way we work and to the way we support the customers who use our Fleet and Workshop Management Systems to keep moving our customers and our business forward.
Each day is a moving feast bringing new challenges but as a team, we are working together which seems an odd statement to make when we are all working remotely. We are working in the kitchen, makeshift offices in bedrooms, lounges. We are adapting our working day to take account of our family commitments. I’m choosing to start work at 7 am because that’s what suits my system and is a time when I’m most productive.
Last Monday I had no idea what a softphone was or a VOIP system but here I am headphones on communicating with the rest of the team and our customers, sharing documents online. I’m doing virtual yoga sessions using Zoom even attending my Slimming World class remotely. Aren’t humans adaptive and resilient?
Yes, what a difference a week has made!
